The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Nigeria has joined forces with the Belgian livestock sector to launch the Animal Biometrics Identification System (ABIS), a facility committed to transforming Nigeria's livestock sector into a modern, resilient and globally competitive industry. The initiative also stressed the critical role of knowledge, innovation and international collaboration.
At the National Livestock Transformation Dialogue in Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, the Ministry noted that the sector can no longer be constrained by outdated practices and weak knowledge transfer. It was emphasised that sustainable productivity requires a seamless connection between farms, abattoirs, markets and consumers.

The Ministry explained that farms and abattoirs are two ends of the same vision. At one end, animals are raised sustainably, while at the other, they are processed to world-class standards. Between these two points lies a value chain that creates jobs, empowers young people and women, drives growth and secures Nigeria’s place in the global livestock market.
Meanwhile, the Belgian Ambassador, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Livestock Development in Abuja, announced an upcoming trade mission to Nigeria in November 2025. The mission will focus on agriculture, food systems, cold-chain management and artificial intelligence solutions for livestock identification and traceability.
